"In the immediate aftermath of the 2001 anthrax attacks, White House officials repeatedly pressed FBI Director Robert Mueller to prove it was a second-wave assault by Al Qaeda, but investigators ruled that out, the Daily News has learned.
After the Oct. 5, 2001, death from anthrax exposure of Sun photo editor Robert Stevens, Mueller was "beaten up" during President Bush's morning intelligence briefings for not producing proof the killer spores were the handiwork of terrorist mastermind Osama Bin Laden, according to a former aide.
"They really wanted to blame somebody in the Middle East," the retired senior FBI official told The News.
On October 15, 2001, President Bush said, "There may be some possible link" to Bin Laden, adding, "I wouldn't put it past him." Vice President Cheney also said Bin Laden's henchmen were trained "how to deploy and use these kinds of substances, so you start to piece it all together.""
"When Americans were asked in a 2007 poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press to name the journalist they most admired, Mr. Stewart, the fake news anchor, came in at No. 4, tied with the real news anchors Brian Williams and Tom Brokaw of NBC, Dan Rather of CBS and Anderson Cooper of CNN. And a study this year from the center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism concluded that “ ‘The Daily Show’ is clearly impacting American dialogue” and “getting people to think critically about the public square.”
While the show scrambled in its early years to book high-profile politicians, it has since become what Newsweek calls “the coolest pit stop on television,” with presidential candidates, former presidents, world leaders and administration officials signing on as guests. One of the program’s signature techniques — using video montages to show politicians contradicting themselves — has been widely imitated by “real” news shows, while Mr. Stewart’s interviews with serious authors like Thomas Ricks, George Packer, Seymour Hersh, Michael Beschloss and Reza Aslan have helped them and their books win a far wider audience than they otherwise might have had."
"Hair Samples in Anthrax Case Don't Match Strands From Mailbox in Princeton Are Not From Ivins, Investigators Say
By Carrie Johnson Washington Post Staff Writer Thursday, August 14, 2008; Page A02
Federal investigators probing the deadly 2001 anthrax attacks recovered samples of human hair from a mailbox in Princeton, N.J., but the strands did not match the lead suspect in the case, according to sources briefed on the probe. FBI agents and U.S. Postal Service inspectors analyzed the data in an effort to place Fort Detrick, Md., scientist Bruce E. Ivins at the mailbox from which bacteria-laden letters were sent to Senate offices and media organizations, the sources said.
The hair sample is one of many pieces of evidence over which researchers continue to puzzle in the case, which ended after Ivins committed suicide July 29 as prosecutors prepared to seek his indictment. Authorities released sworn statements and search warrants last week at a news conference in which they asserted that Ivins was their sole suspect. But the materials have not dampened speculation about the merits of the investigative findings and the government's aggressive pursuit of Ivins, a 62-year-old anthrax vaccine researcher. Conspiracy theories have flourished since the 2001 attacks, which killed five people and sickened 17 others. (...) Friends and former colleagues of Ivins, who died before he could see the full array of evidence prosecutors had gathered, continue to demand information about the DNA advances that authorities say led them to a flask in Ivins's lab. Defense lawyer Paul F. Kemp yesterday said he wonders "where Ivins could have possibly stored this anthrax without any employees seeing it, or if he took it home, why there was no trace" of the deadly spores, despite repeated FBI searches over the past two years of Ivins's car, his work locker, a safe-deposit box and his house. ...
Nearly seven years after the incidents, however, investigators have come up dry in their efforts to find direct evidence to place Ivins at the Nassau Street mailbox in September and October 2001."
"A large contingent of Georgia Army National Guard soldiers flew to the Republic of Georgia on Sunday for joint military exercises at a time when tension is brewing in the region.
The soldiers, mostly from the metro area, will be part of "Immediate Response 2008," which will amount to the largest U.S. footprint on the crossroads of Asia and Europe since the Cold War began.
The three-week operation also provides practical training for the 48th Infantry Brigade's 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment just months before a pending deployment to Afghanistan.
"We're going to a sensitive part of the world," said Atlanta's Maj. Matt Smith, 36, who took over command of 1-121 just last month.
"There has been significant geopolitical activity but it's not our role to upset it," Smith said. "It will be a unique environment, a unique opportunity."
Last week, Russian fighter jets entered Georgian airspace and Georgia recalled its ambassador from Moscow."
"U.S. troops, contractors in Georgia not believed to be at risk Fighting has erupted between Georgia, a staunch U.S. ally, and Russia over the breakaway province of South Ossetia, but none of the U.S. personnel in Georgia appear to be at risk.
There are 127 U.S. military trainers there, of whom about 35 are civilian contractors, according to Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.
All are safe and accounted for, according to United States European Command.
“They are safe and not engaged (in this conflict),” said Lt. Col. John Dorrian, EUCOM spokesman.
Dorrian said it would be inappropriate to speculate whether their level of involvement could change.
U.S. Forces have been busy preparing Georgians for a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“Obviously those training activities are suspended at this point,” Dorrian said from EUCOM’s headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany.
Meanwhile, EUCOM leaders are looking at whether the conflict poses any safety concerns for personnel stationed at the U.S. Embassy.
“We’re monitoring the situation to determine if any U.S. military support might be required in support of the U.S. Embassy,” Dorrian said. “We’re very considered and are monitoring it closely.”
As of Friday afternoon, no evacuations had been ordered."

"Jewish Georgian Minister Temur Yakobshvili on Sunday praised the Israel Defense Forces for its role in training Georgian troops and said Israel should be proud of its military might, in an interview with Army Radio.
"Israel should be proud of its military which trained Georgian soldiers," Yakobashvili told Army Radio in Hebrew, referring to a private Israeli group Georgia had hired.
Yakobashvili, Georgia's minister of reintegration, added that this training provided Georgia with the know-how needed to defend itself against Russian forces in the clashes which erupted last last week in the separatist region of South Ossetia."

"The Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, 1,090 miles (1,750km) long, and designed to carry 1 millions barrels of oil a day from the Caucasus to the Mediterranean when it reaches full capacity (scheduled for 2009), has been built by a consortium of Western oil companies led by BP, which also includes the American oil giant Halliburton, closely linked with US vice-president Dick Cheney and other senior figures in the Bush administration. Its building was begun in 1998; planning for it has been going in for much longer. Not by chance, the pipeline, after winding through Azerbaijan, Georgia and eastern Turkey, arrives at the Ceyhan Maritime Export Terminal on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, right next to the major American airbase at Incirlik. The fact that the project has cost more than $4bn -- 75 percent of which has come from bank loans underwritten by western governments, and 25 percent from governments directly -- is itself a sign of both the scale of profits that the Western companies hope to make from it, and its importance to Western governments. In future, it also has the potential to link up with gas pipelines running across the Caspian from Kazakhstan.
When the pipeline is fully operational, which is expected to take another five years, it will be capable of carrying 1 percent of the world’s daily oil requirements. It has been designed to enable Western companies to access the major oil reserves of the Caspian Sea without having to deal with either Russia, which Western governments regard as a strategic rival, or Iran, which is regarded as an enemy. The oil reserves of the Caspian Sea are regarded as a useful alternative source of oil to the Muslim Middle East, which is regarded as unreliable because of the widespread hatred of America among the region’s people. It also provides an alternative to the existing pipeline owned by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which leads from Baku to Novorossiysk in Georgia, which is regarded as being too much under Russian control."
"A North Carolina man is protesting an advertisement at one of the nation's most popular clothing stores.
Jimmy Stopper said a sexually charged advertisement at a Raleigh Abercrombie and Fitch should be removed.
The ad is inside Raleigh's Crabtree Valley Mall.
On Saturday, Stopper and a group of picketers protested outside of the Triangle Town Center. Each demonstrator wore a white shirt displaying the name of a Web site, www.MovethePicture.com .
"Yeah, there's a 10-by-8-foot sexually explicit photo in the mall area," Stopper said. "Little children are being exposed to it. It's a man pulling off his pants almost completely, and the mall refuses to move the picture.""

""USAMRIID doesn't deal with powdered anthrax," said Richard O. Spertzel, a former biodefense scientist who worked with Ivins at the Army lab. "I don't think there's anyone there who would have the foggiest idea how to do it. You would need to have the opportunity, the capability and the motivation, and he didn't possess any of those."
Another scientist who worked with Ivins acknowledged it would have been technically possible to manufacture powdered anthrax at Fort Detrick, but unlikely that anyone could have done so without being detected.
"As well as we knew each other, and the way the labs were run, someone would discover what was going on," said the scientist, "especially since dry spores were not something that we prepared or worked with."
Scientists, co-workers and people who for years have researched the anthrax investigation, only to encounter frustration, misinformation and false leads, say law enforcement authorities should lay out their case as soon as possible. They want authorities to explain how Ivins, who led a seemingly normal life as a family man, churchgoer and volunteer, could have been responsible for one of the nation's most notorious unsolved crimes.
Authorities cast doubt yesterday on reports that Ivins had acted for financial gain based on patents and scientific advances he had made. Experiments by Ivins, working with several other Fort Detrick colleagues, led to two patented inventions considered crucial in the development of a genetically modified anthrax vaccine made by VaxGen, a California company that secured large government contracts after the 2001 anthrax attacks.
But sources familiar with details of the Army's patent process said it was unlikely that Ivins or the other scientists would reap a big financial windfall from VaxGen's vaccine production. They say the government restricts income from inventions produced in its laboratories to no more than $150,000 per year, but the amount is often considerably less.
Jaye Holly, who lived next door to the Ivinses until she and her husband moved to New York a month ago, said she couldn't believe that her former neighbor, who was obsessed with grass recycling and who happily drove a 20-year-old faded red van, would endanger others for financial gain.
"I can't imagine him being involved in a scheme to make money or to make a profit, especially one that would put people at risk or even die," Holly said. "That's not the Bruce we knew. He was sweet, friendly. I mean, he was into grass recycling." "
"A top government scientist who helped the FBI analyze samples from the 2001 anthrax attacks has died in Maryland from an apparent suicide, just as the Justice Department was about to file criminal charges against him for the attacks, the Los Angeles Times has learned.
Bruce E. Ivins, 62, who for the last 18 years worked at the government's elite biodefense research laboratories at Ft. Detrick, Md., had been informed of his impending prosecution, said people familiar with Ivins, his suspicious death and the FBI investigation."
Og storyen bygges videre: ABC News: Counselor: Anthrax Scientist Was 'Homicidal' A therapist who counseled an Army scientist under scrutiny for 2001's deadly anthrax attacks recently told a courtroom she was afraid of her patient and described him as "a sociopath, homicidal killer." (...) Counselor Jean Duley had been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., that was considering evidence for an indictment against Ivins. But before her scheduled appearance, she filed a request with a local court in Frederick, Md.
Her account of Ivins' state of mind in the weeks before his death sharply conflicted with the more long-term memories of Ivins' friends, who recalled him as a talented scientist who spent his time outside the lab as a Red Cross volunteer, a musician at his church and a devoted family man.
But in weekly therapy sessions, Duley said she saw Ivins' frightening transformation. And on July 24, she asked the court to protect her from him. (...) And she made this chilling claim: "He has been forensically diagnosed by several top psychiatrists as a sociopath, homicidal killer," she said."
"Are members of a disputed mercenary killer group now working with the DEA? A photo from the LA Times shows proof of one of two things; either Blackwater members are now working for the Bush White House's Drug Enforcement Agency, or this semi-illegitimate band of rogue federal cops have worse discipline than any of us ever imagined.
In her article, the LA Times' Sandy Banks states that the flak-jacketed federal agents executing their commando-style raid at the Organica Collective, overtook a pot dispensary with such a mellow vibe that its business card features a dove and a cross.
During their "raid" DEA agents cut open a safe and confiscated boxes of records, a pair of flat screen monitors listing available varieties of weed, and the contents of an ATM. In true form, the federal cops left the place in a total mess.
A customer named Clyde Carey told Times reporter Tami Abdollah that they frightened the customers and employees by storming in "in full combat gear." He said it was "like literally an episode of '24' when they bust in on a terrorist cell.""
"An Army representative initially told LaVena's father, Dr. John Johnson, that his daughter died of "died of self-inflicted, noncombat injuries," but initially added that it was not a suicide. The subsequent Army investigation reversed this finding and declared LaVena's death a suicide, a finding refuted by the soldier's family."
"The photographs revealed that Lavena, a small woman, barely 5 feet tall and weighing less than 100 pounds, had been struck in the face with a blunt instrument, perhaps a weapon stock. Her nose was broken and her teeth knocked backwards. One elbow was distended. The back of her clothes had debris on them indicating she had been dragged from one location to another. The photographs of her disrobed body showed bruises, scratch marks and teeth imprints on the upper part of her body. The right side of her back as well as her right hand had been burned apparently from a flammable liquid poured on her and then lighted. The photographs of her genital area revealed massive bruising and lacerations. A corrosive liquid had been poured into her genital area, probably to destroy DNA evidence of sexual assault.
Despite the bruises, scratches, teeth imprints and burns on her body, Lavena was found completely dressed in the burning tent. There was a blood trail from outside a contractor's tent to inside the tent. She apparently had been dressed after the attack and her attacker placed her body into the tent and set it on fire."

"A teenager from Branson who was hit with an electric stun gun 19 times by police has recovered enough to do an interview with a reporter.
Ozark police found Mace Hutchinson on July 19 underneath the Highway F overpass over U.S. 65. Mace’s family says he broke his back in a fall off the bridge. When he wouldn't move, police repeatedly used an electric stun gun on him.
Mace says he doesn’t remember much about that night and there are still several unanswered questions about how Mace ended up under the bridge. But what he is able to say is he believes there was no good reason why anyone in his situation would be stunned 19 times. He hopes the police officers are held accountable.
"There's no way that they had to Tase me that many times,” he said.
Mace spent his 17th birthday lying in a hospital bed.
"I had a broken back, broken foot."
Nearly two weeks later, he's out of the hospital but still lying in bed, hardly able to move.
"It should be a couple months before I'm able to walk on my own."
His family says what made his situation worse is that his surgery had to be postponed because he had been stunned by Ozark police 19 times.
"At least I'm alive though."
Mace says he still can't remember how he ended up at the bottom of the bridge. He says he knows he didn't willingly jump.
"I know I'm lucky to survive that far of a fall."
Police records say Hutchinson was aggressive with them, and tried to get up and get into traffic. Mace points out that he doesn’t weigh much and wonders why an officer didn’t just restrain him.
Police also say he yelled threatening remarks about harming officers. Those things combined were why they used the electric stun gun on him.
"He was saying things like, ‘Kill cops, shoot cops,’” Ozark Police Capt. Thomas Rousset said on July 23.
Mace says he doesn't remember that and certainly doesn't know how it would have been possible, with his injuries, for him to move toward the highway."
"There is real hope that what’s happening in a Houston lab might lead to a cure for HIV.
“We have found an innovative way to kill the virus by finding this small region of HIV that is unchangeable,” Dr. Sudhir Paul of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston said.
Dr. Paul and Dr. Miguel Escobar aren’t talking about just suppressing HIV – they’re talking about destroying it permanently by arming the immune system with a new weapon lab tests have shown to be effective.
Ford Stuart has been HIV positive for 15 years. He’s on a powerful drug cocktail that keeps the disease in check.
“I’m on four different medications. Three of them are brand new, and it’s the first time that I’ve ever been non-detectible,” Stuart said. “I’m down to about – just for the HIV – about nine pills per day, five in the morning and four at night.”
But Stuart knows HIV mutates, and eventually it will learn how to outsmart his medications.
“The virus is truly complex and has many tricks up its sleeve,” Paul said.
But Dr. Paul thinks he’s cracked a code.
“We’ve discovered the weak spot of HIV,” he said.
Paul and his team have zeroed in on a section of a key protein in HIV’s structure that does not mutate.
“The virus needs at least one constant region, and that is the essence of calling it the Achilles heel,” Paul said.
That Achilles heel is the doctors’ way in. They take advantage of it with something called an abzyme.
It’s naturally produced by people, like lupus patients. When they applied that abzyme to the HIV virus, it permanently disarmed it.
“What we already have in our hand are the abzymes that we could be infusing into the human subjects with HIV infection, essentially to move the virus,” Paul said.
Basically, their idea could be used to control the disease for people who already have it and prevent infection for those at risk.
The theory has held up in lab and animal testing. The next step is human trials."
