10,000 in Boston rally against war
By Stephanie M. Peters, Globe Correspondent | October 28, 2007

As an antiwar rally waged behind her on swampy Boston Common yesterday, Linda Tobin and her two children crouched over a pair of dusty black boots, one of 156 pairs representing each New England casualty of the Iraq war.

"There are so many ways other than war to communicate, especially in this day and age," Tobin said as she moved down a row of boots, part of the "Eyes Wide Open" exhibit. Her conviction brought her the 2 1/2 hours from St. Johnsbury, Vt., with six family members, including children ages 6, 4, and 2.

"It's especially important for the kids to see this because they're the next generation," Tobin said.

The rally attracted many passersby, who stopped to learn what the loud music and large crowds were about, said Angela Kelly, an organizer for the New England United Coalition, which sponsored the rally.

"As soon as they found out what it was about, many people decided to stay and pick up material," she said. "I think it was a powerful demonstration that the peace majority is growing each and every day . . . we certainly brought more people in to build our movement."

From the SF Chronicle:

On cue from a bullhorn's blast, thousands of protesters fell to the pavement on Market Street in a symbolic "die-in" Saturday as part of a coordinated protest staged in cities across the country against the war in Iraq.

For three minutes the demonstrators lay on the pavement, representing what organizers said were more than 1 million Iraqis killed since the war began in 2003. The protesters then resumed their march from San Francisco's Civic Center to Dolores Park.

March organizers put their number at 30,000 - old, young, workers, students, religious leaders. Police declined to give a formal estimate, but onlookers said the demonstrators definitely numbered more than 10,000. They filled up Market Street for several blocks, shouting that U.S. troops should be brought home and carrying banners decrying the war.

A tool for them long posts ..

tn_codificator_510px.jpg

I wrote this tool some months ago while developing on the xPresso publishing system (NO), and has done some rewriting this week to implement further functionality.

The Codificator now provides:
- automatic code wrapping in DC board format
- conversion of regular HTML-formatted text to DC board formatted text
- link extraction from HTML to DC board format
- auto fetch of webpages, with on-select conversion of content to DC board format.

It won't boil your coffee or knit you a warm sweater for the winter, but it may help you to be more efficient when you're online discussing politics.

AnoBBS is a opensource 3DES-encrypted Bulletin Board where users encrypt their messages before submit with a common known phrase, using javascript. The server does not know the key, so this is end-to-end encryption where the key is never submitted. The technology used is Ajax and PHP, the forum files are stored as XML.
Below is a list of the basic functionality:
- user authentication
- topic list and topic view
- three userlevels; admin, moderator and user
- post threads
- post and edit replies
- print or save threads
- edit, delete and lock threads (mod)
- edit forumdata and users (admin)
- save BBS (admin)
- delete BBS (admin)

The BBS is very simple to install and even simpler to use. It requires only a standard php distro on the server and a javascript enable browser to function.
